Resources: key stage 3 science mock paper with SATs analysis spreadsheets

Explanation

We are pleased to support the work of a consortium of LEAs (St Helen's, Cumbria, Herefordshire, Shropshire, Salford and Blackpool) who have developed two key stage 3 'mock' tests, one for pupils working at levels 3-6 and one for those working at levels 5-7. The material is posted here to assist easy dissemination. Other schools may find these helpful resources.

The files can be opened in Testbase issues 6 (2002) and then used to print out the papers. Also included is an analysis spreadsheet for use with MS Excel to help identify pupil strengths and weaknesses and a word document that briefly
explains how to use the spreadsheets.

Dear Colleague
Key Stage 3 Science Mock Paper with SATs Analysis Spreadsheets. The mock paper is a collation from paper 1 and paper 2 2002.  Most of the questions were chosen because they were highlighted as areas of difficulty on the QCA Standards Report, therefore, pupils may under perform compared to the 'real thing' you may want to change the mark boundaries to take account
of this.  Paper 3-6 has 3 extra possible marks and the 5-7 paper has 4 extra marks so this will compensate to some extent.

We have included an automatic levelling process which is based on the 2002 boundaries.

The other health warning is that there will be science areas that you may not have taught by the time you set the mock.  You could suggest that pupils leave out these questions.

The SATs analysis is particularly intended for your level 4/5 boundary pupils so that you can compare the performance of those that achieve level 5 with those that don't and put in place strategies which are specific to your own pupils (refer to QCA Standards report).

Summary

   1. Pupils may under perform in terms of levels on this mock so:

  • You could alter the grade boundaries;
  • Leave out questions in topic areas which haven't yet been taught.

   2. Analyse level 4/5 boundary pupils and put strategies in place.
   3. Refer to QCA Standards report for comments on questions.

Yours sincerely

You may wish to download the following files which can also be used to analyse the 2002 'mock' paper. The pupil record sheets are intended for completion by pupils and can be put along side each other to show a class profile of shaded/unshaded boxes to inform next steps. The spreadsheet can be used to enter the data to produce a smarter version!
